Nature Talk: Restoring the Reefs with Dan Goulart

Wild oyster reefs have experienced a dramatic decline, with an estimated 85% loss globally and as much as 95% in New England. Once abundant throughout our coastal waters, these reefs are now functionally extinct in many areas. This loss affects far more than oysters themselves - it impacts water quality, shoreline stability, fisheries, biodiversity, and the coastal economies and cultures that depend on healthy estuaries.
About the Presentation:
We are grateful to Dan for presenting an engaging, meaningful, and informative talk on restoring wild oyster reefs and the collaborative efforts underway to bring them back to our local waters in Westport and beyond. His presentation highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships and community involvement in rebuilding these critical ecosystems.
What Was Covered
During the talk, Dan explained what led to the collapse of oyster reefs, including long-term overharvest, habitat loss, shell depletion, pollution, and disease. He introduced the Eastern oyster (a keystone species capable of filtering up to 50 gallons of water per day) and described how restoration projects are carefully planned and monitored. From habitat assessments and permitting, to laying shell substrate (cultch) and placing live oysters and spat-on-shell, restoration is an essential process. He also emphasized the important role local aquaculture growers play in supplying oysters, and both planting and monitoring efforts.
Key takeaways from the presentation include:
The need to think beyond short-term grants toward system-scale restoration
The importance of rebuilding historic reef acreage to see meaningful ecological impact
The value of local oversight and shell recycling programs.
Oyster restoration is about more than rebuilding reefs, it’s about: strengthening water quality, protecting shorelines, supporting marine life, and preserving the coastal heritage that connects our communities to the ocean.
