Fall Foraging Walk
Saturday, October 3, 9:30am-12:30pm
Fee: Free Program
The Westport River watershed is home to over 100 species of edible wild plants, many of which are more flavorful and/or nutritious than their cultivated counterparts. At least a dozen tasty species of wild mushrooms are also known to grow in the watershed, and early fall is (usually) a very good time to encounter them. Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of the book Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten, on a 2+hour ramble through local conservation land to learn about the comestible qualities of at least two dozen wild plant and mushroom species. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided along with information on edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation method(s), along with guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging.
Call WRWA to register for the program, 508-636-3016 or visit our website for more information. The walk will meet at WRWA office 1151 Main Road, Westport, MA.
